THE QUICK ANSWER
What to settle first.
A useful tile-on-slab moisture map needs fixed locations, material transitions, the measurement method and explicit access limits. Name the tile field, grout or perimeter reference, wall base, cabinet edge and every transition into another finish. Repeat observations at the same labeled points; do not compare unnamed readings or treat one surface number as a building-wide clearance.
AT A GLANCE
Three points to clarify.
Location
Use a fixed corner, opening or cabinet edge.
Material
Name the surface and adjoining assembly separately.
Evidence
Keep method, time and access limit with the point.
01 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Draw boundaries that another person can find again
Start with a simple room outline and fixed references such as doorways, cabinet ends and wall corners. Label the visible water edge and the adjoining materials. Avoid using only ‘kitchen floor’ or ‘hallway’ when the proposed work depends on which edge, built-in or transition was reached.
Mark inaccessible areas, including fixed cabinets or layers the assessor did not reach. An access limit is a finding about the inspection, not evidence that the concealed area is dry. If access later changes, add a dated layer to the map instead of replacing the original boundary.
02 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Keep material, method and time attached to each point
For each recorded point, name the material and the method the provider used. Ask for the date and a consistent reference so later observations are comparable. A reading on tile, drywall or wood trim does not automatically describe the concrete slab, adhesive, cabinet base or adjoining flooring.
Ask the provider to explain what a change means for the next decision. Do not publish universal pass/fail numbers or operate instruments without appropriate training. Equipment removal, finish repair and source repair should each refer to the material-level record they rely on.

Use the map to challenge vague scope language
When a proposal says ‘dry the room,’ ask it to identify the mapped materials, equipment purpose, monitoring points and exclusions. When added removal is proposed, request the affected map point, new evidence and responsible authorizer. The map should reduce ambiguity, not substitute for a qualified assessment.
Ask the answering provider to identify itself and confirm availability, assessment charges and the written scope at your address. Request a material-specific explanation appropriate to your property. This site does not prescribe instruments, thresholds, demolition or flooring treatment and does not guarantee that an inaccessible assembly can be dried in place.
YOUR DECISION WORKSHEET
Material-boundary map key
| Point | Record together | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Tile field | Fixed reference, method and time | One unnamed room reading |
| Wall or cabinet edge | Material and access limit | Assuming concealed layers are dry |
| Floor transition | Both finishes and visible boundary | Combining unlike materials |

Your call notes
Questions to ask: Sketch fixed room references and finish transitions. Label inaccessible areas as not assessed. Attach material, method and time to every recorded point. Please confirm whether you handle the water removal, cleanup or drying needs I describe and serve my address, plus any assessment fees and exclusions.
Common questions
Can one tile reading clear the whole room?
No universal conclusion follows. Ask what material the method evaluates, which points were checked and which layers or edges remain uncertain.
Why preserve the first map after work changes?
It shows the evidence and boundary used for the original decision. Later findings can then be compared without erasing what was known earlier.
